John Barrie – Fulbright Talk – Singapore

Mr. Barrie spends up to 25% of every year living in developing countries, often in remote villages and urban slum cities.  “First hand experience living and working with your clients is the only meaningful way to understand their needs” says Barrie, “it inspires designs that address real problems for real people”.   Mr. Barrie brings his deep knowledge of life at the bottom of the economic pyramid and his long experience designing new technologies to create new, affordable and sustainable technologies for poorest people on the planet.

John Barrie is Executive Director of the Appropriate Technology Collaborative in Ann Arbor, MI, Guatemala and Nicaragua.  He is also past principal architect and industrial designer with John Barrie Associates in Ann Arbor, MI.  John Barrie has been an Adjunct Professor of Architecture at the University of Michigan and an Adjunct faculty member at Washtenaw Community College. John is known for his deep commitment to the principles of sustainable design incorporating concern for social justice, economic development and the creation of sustainable designs that empower low income people to improve the quality of their lives. John has contributed to the design, specification and construction of environmental projects throughout North America. Select projects include work with Warner Bros. Studios and the United States Air Force and the U.S. Department of Energy.

John Barrie conducts workshops on Sustainable Design and Technology, Design for the Bottom of the Economic Pyramid (BoP), and the Design of New Appropriate Technologies.
