John Barrie is Executive Director of the Appropriate Technology Collaborative. in Ann Arbor, MI, Guatemala and Nicaragua.  He is also past principal architect and industrial designer with John Barrie Associates in Ann Arbor, MI.  John Barrie has been an Adjunct Professor of Architecture at the University of Michigan and an Adjunct faculty member at Washtenaw Community College. John is known for his deep commitment to the principles of sustainable design incorporating concern for social justice, economic development and the creation of sustainable designs that empower low income people to improve the quality of their lives. John has contributed to the design, specification and construction of environmental projects throughout North America. Select projects include work with Warner Bros. Studios and the United States Air Force and the U.S. Department of Energy.

In 2000 John Barrie started The Stratos Company LLC, a sustainable technology company that provides consulting and incubator services to develop new materials, structures and energy systems. John has helped to create new Structural Insulating Panels, lightweight insulating ceramics and he is currently working on a highly efficient air conditioning system based on natural cycles and non toxic refrigerants.

John Barrie conducts workshops on energy efficient design, architectural design, indoor air quality, facilities management, and new building technologies.

In 2007 John Barrie started The Appropriate Technology Collaborative, a nonprofit that focuses on the design and distribution of appropriate technology for low income people in the developing world.
