Plastic Bags don’t decompose in our landfills. They just sit there taking up space. Worse yet, millions of plastic bags become airborne every year getting caught in trees or landing in our oceans. Somewhere in the Pacific there is an island of plastic waste called The Great Pacific Garbage Patch – a heap of plastic debris floating in the Pacific that’s twice the size of Texas, according to marine biologists. We produce 500 billion plastic bags per year and they take up to 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill. They litter our cities, pollute the oceans and kill unfortunate animals that eat them.

Now a Waterloo Ontario teenager has found a way to make plastic bags biodegrade faster — in three months, he figures.

Daniel Burd’s project won the top prize at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Ottawa. He came back with a long list of awards, including a $10,000 prize, a $20,000 scholarship, and recognition that he has found a practical way to help the environment.
