Biogas Digester, Waste = Fuel
Syntex Biodigester
Sintex Industries, a plastics and textiles manufacturer in India, is betting it can find profit in human waste. SDU has covered biodigesters before, the Sintex model is more expesive than the Xela Teco flexible unit but it looks like it doesn’t need to have additional protection from the environment.
The Sintex biogas digester turns human waste, cow dung, chicken waste or kitchen garbage into fuel that can be used for cooking or generating electricity, simultaneously addressing two of the developing world’s major needs: energy and sanitation.
Sintex’s digester uses bacteria to break down waste into fertilizer, much like a septic tank. In the process, the bacteria emit gases, mostly methane. But instead of being vented into the air, they are piped into a storage canister.
From Forbes Magazine:
A one-cubic-meter digester, primed with cow dung to provide bacteria, can convert the waste generated by a four-person family into enough gas to cook all its meals and provide sludge for fertilizer. A model this size costs about $425 but will pay for itself in energy savings in less than two years. That’s still a high price for most Indians, even though the government recently agreed to subsidize about a third of the cost for these family-sized units. “We want to create a new industry for portable sanitation in India that’s not available now,” says S.B. Dangayach, Sintex’s managing director.

Charles-
Sintex Industries, http://www.sintex-plastics.com/ is a plastics and textile company located in Gujarat, India. Their biogas digester is not listed on their website – yet.
From the Biogas Blog:
Even though Sintex has only installed 100 of these biogas digesters to date (February 28th, 2008), the company plans on expanding its biogas division by least ten times over the course of 2008. In the long term, as larger buildings employ this technology, whether it be Sintex’s or some other firms, biogas use in India will surely see widespread use even in its largest cities.

Will Syntex Biodigesters or any other brands be available in the United States, for sale to the public? Can they be used for human waste? Even if the amount of biogas produced is small, these digesters are a lot cheaper than the composting toilets I’ve seen.

Do forgive me for mentioning it, but in researching the Sintex digester, I came across your page and thought you may be interested in the newly reprinted Complete Biogas Handbook, which has been given strong favorable reviews by Mother Earth News, J. Baldwin, et al. (See the website for full information and downloads of selected chapters and appendices.)

David-
Thanks for commenting on SDU! J. Baldwin makes some great points in his review of your book.
If you have an electronic version of the book I will review it for SDU and also AppTechDesign.org.
Did you catch my recent post on Efficient Ethanol, where Washington University researchers have found that a biodigester added on the back end of the ethanol fermentation process can produce about half of the total energy required to make ethanol?
Thanks for the good work and good luck!

Dear John,
Forgive me late reply, but I do not often visit your site…
There are a number of chapters of the Biogas Handbook available on the referenced site (http://www.completebiogas.com).
I have not yet seen the post on Efficient Ethanol, but I will visit as soon as I finish typing…
Please let me know if there is any way I can provide further assistance.

The $425 price tag of Sintex biodigester can make. …. this an incredible part of the stimulus package if Sintex would share its patent and let it be manufactured in U.S. as well as India. Since we dont have a commerce secretary appointed yet, to whom is this idea best communicated at the present time? Are the authors of the Biogas Handbook acting on this item? Are there American manufacturers of a similar product at a similar price?

Our company is a specialized biogas company. We develop biogas system, and the related equipments and products to build the biogas systems. The following are the biogas system-the Puxin biogas system we developed .
Puxin family size biogas system
Puxin medium size biogas system
Puxin big size biogas system
Introduction of Puxin family size and medium size biogas system. Puxin family size biogas system is mainly applied to farmer’s home. The family size biogas system is composed of a 6 or 10 m3 biogas plant, the pipe system, the gas purify system and the appliances or electricity generator. Puxin medium size biogas system is mainly applied for small size livestock farms to treat the animal waste, for schools or factories etc. to treat waste water from toilets. The medium size biogas system is composed of a group of 10 m3 biogas plants that are formed into a unit, the pipe system, the gas purify system and the appliances or electricity generator. For Puxin family size and medium size biogas system, we sell all the necessary equipments and products needed to build the system and train technicians for our customers. Our customers build the biogas system with our equipments and products for their customers. The following are the equipments and products needed to build Puxin family size and medium size biogas system,Abroad market: The products for Puxin family size biogas plant (steel mould; gasholder etc.) have been exported over twenty countries

Hi Rosemary-
We don’t have design drawings online yet. You may find the information you need at http://www.aidg.org – they have built several small scale biodigesters. If you can’t find the info, contact me and I will find something for you.

Dear sir
We are expecting increase in demand of producing power from other sources like cow-mature in our country, IRAN.
In this regard we are trying to find companies who are famous in manufacturing of said plants with high experiences.
If you could help us in this regard it is highly appreciated.
Thanks

No-one from Sintex has been in touch about our serious enquiry re. the boidigester.
Have they contacted anyone else who has asked for prices, etc. on this forum please?
October 6th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
Hi-
I would contact Sintex directly from their website. http://www.sintex-plastics.com/
They are primarily a plastics manufacturer. Their design should be easy to copy or improve upon. There are dozens of NGOs making this type of biodigester. I would work with a plastic manufacturer in your area. With a few sketches you could find existing materials and make your own digester.
Good Luck

I am looking for a biogas plant design that is not costly but effective and effecient to use in our small farm in the Philippines. The requirement should not be costly but it can be utilized in rural area such as my place.
I hope you can provide me one with proper measurement so that we can implement it to our place.
I am waiting for your positive response on this matter

Ladies & Gentlemen,
I have gone through all the mails given in connection with the Mini
biogas digester..
In fact we, at India, have been in this business of manufacturing the
bio gas holders/kits/systems for the last 14 years and we have now designed a new Mini biogas digester, which would cost you less than
just 100 USD, which gives 1 cubic meter of gas , which is enough for a family of 5 -6, and also it gives organic manure around 25 kgs perday,
out of the input , i.e cowdung from just 2 cows.
It is sold in south india, and people are using this here, easily.
You can recover the cost of the investment by the value of gas and
organic manre in just 3-6 months.
OUrs is a new model , digester which is a special Arjun UV-7, Special Fabric, and the same can be used in all the big hotels and restaurants where they just put the food waste, they generate everyday, and convert that into organic manure along with the gas to run their stoves.
We also make huge digesters , for industrial applications, too, where
they store 200, 300, 500 cubic metre of biogas.
WE also run generators, which are running only with the biogas, without a single drop of diesel and that offers a big savings on the power bill.

I’ve been involved in digester discussions for about five years and seen the many, many failures of large farm based digesters in the U.S. I have also seen the evolution of small digesters in India, Nepal, Tanzania, Costa Rica; and now with SINTEX and PUXIN, and others in S. Africa and Turkey the emergence of scaleable digesters that work and can be enhanced with pre-processing and gas management components. KUDOS!
