I have worked on dozens of designs for beautiful sites over the years. Often my clients want to build their homes right in the middle of the most beautiful part of their property. My goal has been to convince my clients that the most beautiful places are the ones to be preserved and that they should build in a way that doesn’t detract from the natural beauty of the place.
I’ve built a few houses nestled into hillsides, one side deeply embedded and one open to the sun, but I never had the chance to build a fully earth sheltered home.
The house above in Vals, Switzerland is a good example of not messing with the beauty of the land. It does, in my mind, add some interest to the landscape without dominating it. Architects from SeArch and Christian Müller deserve great kudos for making this a very interesting yet subtle design. It looks to be a mash up of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Solar Hemicycle home and the architecture of Malcolm Wells.

We did some traveling around australia a few years ago we went through a town in south australia called coober pedy it had some amazing building and houses that were built underground it was amazing 40 deg temperature outside but the temperature in the house was around 24 degrees. search the name to check out the pics online
