Ethiopian Bulb Exchange Program

The new bulbs cost more but use 80% less electricity

I found out listening to NPR today that the BBC has one of the largest science journalism departments in the world.  No wonder their “Science & Environment” section is so through.  They are carrying an interesting story about a light bulb exchange program in Ethiopia.  The country relies almost entirely on hydroelectric power.  During periods of drought when reservoirs run low, the country experiences electrical shortages.  From the story:

Ethiopians are rushing to get their hands on free energy-saving light bulbs which are being handed out by a utility to stop power cuts.Four million low-energy light bulbs are being given away in exchange for old-style incandescent ones by the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation.

It’s exciting to see areas of the developing world taking steps to become more sustainable in light of the climate change discussions in Poland earlier this month.
